ZIMBABWE HEADING FOR ANOTHER DISASTER UNDER MUSHAYAVANHU’S ZIG PLAN
Zimbabwe is again on the edge of an economic disaster. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor, John Mushayavanhu, now says he wants ZiG to be the only currency used in the country. This is shocking. ZiG is already one of the weakest currencies in the world. Making it the only currency will kill the economy. It is like forcing people to walk on a broken bridge and hoping they don’t fall.
Many experts are warning that this idea is dangerous. It will not fix anything. In fact, it will make things worse. The reason ZiG looks stable now is not because it is strong. It is because government is not allowing people to use it for many things. You cannot use ZiG to buy fuel. You cannot use it to pay for passports. You also can’t pay some taxes and duties using it. This is not real stability. It is fake.
Professor Gift Mugano explained it well. He said if ZiG was really stable, then why is government afraid to use it for everything? Why are they picking and choosing where it can be used? If it is stable, let people buy fuel and pay taxes using it. But they know what will happen if they do. ZiG will collapse. Prices will shoot up. Inflation will come back stronger than before. And the people will suffer again.
Another expert, Professor Steve Hanke from America, said Zimbabwe has the third worst currency in the world. Only Venezuela and Lebanon have worse money than Zimbabwe. He said our money is losing value fast. He also said the government is printing too much money. Zimbabwe’s money supply is going up by 122% every year. That is very bad. When money supply goes up like that, inflation also rises. And that is exactly what is happening. Hanke said Zimbabwe’s inflation is already at 79% per year. That is crushing for the people.
Steve Hanke even said President Mnangagwa is a masterclass in economic mismanagement. This is true. Every time ZANU PF touches the economy, it falls apart. They never learn. They keep making the same mistakes. The people pay the price every time.
Right now, many people in Zimbabwe are using the US dollar. It is more stable. Prices are more clear. People trust it. But Mushayavanhu wants to remove that safety net. He wants people to only use ZiG. This is like throwing people into a storm without a boat.
The government is pretending that ZiG is a good currency. But even they don’t fully use it. That alone tells you it cannot be trusted. If the people in charge do not believe in it, why should we?
Zimbabwe has suffered too much. From hyperinflation to currency crashes, the people have been through enough. Bringing back a single weak currency will only open old wounds. It will take the country backwards. It will destroy what little hope is left.
This move must be stopped. We cannot keep quiet while the same people who broke the country try to break it again. We must speak out. We must protect the people.
Mushayavanhu’s ZiG dream is not a solution. It is another trap. And once again, it is the ordinary citizen who will suffer the most. We must not let them take us down this road again. Zimbabwe deserves better.
