POWER STRUGGLE BETWEEN MNANGAGWA AND CHIWENGA ESCALATES
Zimbabwe is facing a serious political crisis as President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga fight for power. This struggle has caused major problems within the ruling party, Zanu PF. One of the most vocal figures in this crisis is Blessed Geza, a war veteran who was expelled from Zanu PF. Geza has been openly attacking Mnangagwa and demanding that he step down immediately.
Geza is strongly against Mnangagwa’s plan to extend his rule beyond 2028. He calls it a dictatorship with no wisdom or care for the people. Many people believe that Mnangagwa is trying to get a third term in power but using different words to make it sound legal. Even though Mnangagwa says he follows the constitution, his close supporters are pushing for his stay in power.
Geza is not afraid to speak out. He gave Mnangagwa a 10-day ultimatum to resign or face consequences. However, he later denied making the threat himself. He also said he plans to take over State House, showing that he is ready to fight for leadership. His strong words remind people of the late MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who fought against former President Robert Mugabe before Mnangagwa and Chiwenga removed Mugabe in a coup in 2017.
Geza’s defiance has made many people in Zimbabwe worried. There is growing unrest in the country as the battle for power continues. Zanu PF has expelled Geza for speaking out against Mnangagwa, but war veterans are not fully supporting the president. Many of them say Mnangagwa was not even part of the war for independence. He was trained in military tactics but spent most of his time in Zambia, not on the battlefield.
Despite facing many attacks from Mnangagwa’s supporters, Geza remains determined. He says his goal is not to support one faction of Zanu PF but to remove Mnangagwa for the good of all Zimbabweans. However, most people do not trust Zanu PF’s internal fights. They do not believe Chiwenga will be any better than Mnangagwa, but they still want change.
Mnangagwa has been in power for many years and has ruled with fear. His career is full of violence and harsh rule. He was an important figure in Mugabe’s government, helping to keep control over Zimbabwe through cruel methods. Many people blame him for human rights abuses, economic collapse, and corruption.
Mnangagwa’s rise in politics started in the 1980s when he worked under Mugabe as Minister of State for National Security. He was linked to the Gukurahundi massacres, where thousands of people from the Midlands and Matabeleland were killed. When Mnangagwa took over in 2017, he promised a new and better government. But since then, his leadership has been just as bad as Mugabe’s. His government has been accused of corruption, stealing money, and stopping people from speaking freely.
Geza and other war veterans say Mnangagwa’s government is full of nepotism and stealing. The international community has also spoken out about Mnangagwa’s rule. In 2020, the United States placed sanctions on Mnangagwa and his top officials for human rights violations. The United Kingdom also has its own measures against him and his allies.
Mnangagwa’s biggest problem now is that he faces two major threats. The first is from the people. Zimbabweans are tired of his rule and may rise up against him if the situation gets worse. His power depends on the army, and if the military stops supporting him, he will not be able to control the country.
The second threat is from within Zanu PF. The same people who helped him remove Mugabe are now turning against him. Chiwenga and other top figures in the party want him gone. This makes Mnangagwa’s position very weak.
What happens next will depend on many things, including the army, war veterans, and ordinary people. If Mnangagwa loses support, he may not survive in power much longer. Zimbabwe’s political situation is getting more dangerous, and the coming days may bring major changes in the country.
