BLESSED MHLANGA CLOCKS 50 DAYS IN JAIL
Today marks 50 days since Zimbabwean journalist Blessed Mhlanga was put in jail. He is not a criminal. He did not steal. He did not hurt anyone. He is in jail simply because he was doing his job as a journalist. He was trying to report the truth. But in Zimbabwe, telling the truth can get you into trouble.
Blessed Mhlanga is being kept at Harare Remand Prison. This is one of the worst prisons in Zimbabwe. The place is very dirty. It is full of people. There is not enough food. There is not enough clean water. People there can get very sick. Some people even die because of the bad conditions. It is not a place for someone who has not done anything wrong. But that is where Blessed is.
He has been in jail for 50 days now. He has asked to be released on bail many times. But the courts keep saying no. They are not giving him a fair chance. It is like they are punishing him even before a trial has taken place. This is not how justice should work. Everyone should be innocent until proven guilty. But that is not happening for Blessed Mhlanga.
What is happening to Blessed is not just about him. It shows a bigger problem in Zimbabwe. Journalists in the country are not safe. If they try to report the truth, they can be arrested. They can be beaten. They can be jailed, like Blessed. This is wrong. Journalists should be free to do their jobs. They should not be afraid.
Zimbabwe has been under the same government since 1980. The ruling party, Zanu PF, has been in power for a long time. Over the years, things have become worse. The economy is broken. There are no jobs. People do not have enough food. Many people are poor. Hospitals do not have medicine. Schools do not have books. Life is hard.
On top of all this, the government does not respect human rights. People are not free to speak their minds. If they speak out, they are arrested. If they protest, they are beaten. If they ask for change, they are punished. This is what is happening to Blessed. He asked questions. He reported the truth. Now he is in jail.
Many people in Zimbabwe and around the world are worried. They are calling for Blessed Mhlanga to be released. They say he should not be in jail. They say he was only doing his job. They say journalism is not a crime. These people are right.
If Zimbabwe wants to be a free and fair country, it must stop jailing journalists. It must allow people to speak. It must allow people to write. It must allow people to ask questions. That is what democracy means.
Blessed Mhlanga is a brave man. He is not afraid to tell the truth. He should not be in jail. He should be free. His case reminds us all that freedom is not free. It must be protected. It must be defended. And we must all speak out when it is taken away.
As we mark 50 days since Blessed Mhlanga was locked up, we must not forget him. We must keep talking about him. We must keep asking for his release. We must keep fighting for a better Zimbabwe where no one is jailed for speaking the truth.
