GUARDIANS OF THE CONSTITUTION: A CALL FOR INTEGRITY IN ZIMBABWE

The Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) has issued a strong message urging the nation to protect the Constitution. They are deeply concerned about recent suggestions to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power beyond 2028. These proposals would require removing the presidential term limit from the Constitution, a move they believe would harm the country.

The ZHOCD firmly opposes any attempts to extend the President’s rule. They argue that the Constitution is a vital safeguard for Zimbabwe’s democracy, and tampering with it for political advantage would undermine its integrity. The Church urges President Mnangagwa to honor his commitment to the Constitution and step down at the end of his second term in 2028.

President Mnangagwa has previously pledged to uphold the Constitution and has publicly stated his intention not to extend his presidency. The ZHOCD commends these promises, viewing them as a symbol of respect for Zimbabwe’s history and a step toward national unity and peace. They call on the President to remain true to these commitments, reinforcing his legacy as a leader who respects the rule of law.

The Church warns that altering presidential term limits would erode public trust in the electoral process. Many Zimbabweans already question the fairness of elections, and such a move could deepen these concerns. The ZHOCD emphasizes that Zimbabwe needs stability and unity, particularly during these critical times, to foster economic and social progress.

The ZHOCD is urging all Zimbabweans to stand firm in defending the Constitution. They believe holding the 2028 elections as scheduled, with a peaceful transition of power, is essential for preserving democracy and ensuring accountability.

To strengthen the electoral process, the Church advocates for reforms to make elections more transparent and credible. They stress the importance of giving every Zimbabwean an opportunity to participate in a fair and just electoral system. A smooth transfer of power in 2028 would showcase Zimbabwe’s commitment to democracy and set a positive example for the world.

The ZHOCD outlined five key actions:

  1. President Mnangagwa should respect the Constitution by stepping down in 2028 and supporting a peaceful power transition.
  2. All Zimbabweans should unite to protect the Constitution and prioritize the nation’s welfare.
  3. The government should implement reforms to ensure fair and transparent elections.
  4. Members of Parliament should uphold their duty to safeguard the Constitution and hold the executive accountable.
  5. Political parties should adhere to the laws of Zimbabwe and respect the rules of governance.

The ZHOCD calls on all citizens and leaders to work together to build a brighter future for Zimbabwe. This requires honoring the Constitution and prioritizing decisions that benefit the nation as a whole, rather than individual interests.

The Church concluded their message with a verse from Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

This verse serves as a reminder of the values that should guide leaders and citizens alike—justice, kindness, and humility. The ZHOCD hopes these principles will inspire Zimbabwe’s leaders to act with integrity and ensure a peaceful and democratic future.

The message from the Church is clear: Zimbabwe’s Constitution must be protected, elections must take place in 2028, and a peaceful transfer of power is vital for the nation’s progress. The call is not just to leaders but to every citizen, to uphold the principles that build a strong and united Zimbabwe.
